headline animator (errr…widget) stats…

Wednesday, February 28th, 2007

we launched our first set of “widget stats” today -> we’re providing views (by domain and page) for our headline animator service…

so, publishers can now see how these are consumed across the web - on myspace profiles, web sites in general, email clients, rss readers, etc. just to refresh your memory, here are a couple examples of feed-powered headline animators:

(1) email signature

don loeb
feedburner

donloeb.com - rss, blogs & social media

(2) widgets / banners (viral and/or ad-served)

.

↑ grab this widget!

and, finally, here’s what the stats look like:

right now we’re just showing views of the headline animator. soon, we’ll have all sorts of other stats to help measure engagement across the web using any type of widget - javascript, flash, gifs, proprietary platforms, etc. then, when we tie that data into feed and site stats, it will really start to get interesting…so…more to come!

congrats to john, arun, and the rest of the team…

feeds, feeds, feeds…our latest data…

Thursday, February 22nd, 2007

today, rick wrote a post focused on aggregate level data for feeds. it’s definitely worth a read…

this is the first in a series on engagement metrics for distributed media. as more and more content gets feedified, atomized, mashed-up, and distributed across the web, etc., understanding consumption behaviors off “source” websites (via rss aggregators, widgets, etc.) becomes absolutely critical…

i love graphs..as do all bloggers…so, here’s one…go to the post for context :)

Friday, February 16th, 2007

this morning google announced that they are now reporting subscription numbers for google reader and google IG (personalized homepage). we’ve been working with them for a while to make this happen - thanks to nick, and the team! can’t wait to see the numbers :)

ps - here’s a related post on google’s adsense blog, and a nice little FAQ about feeds and google reader…

the daily show, youtube, and expiring videos…

Tuesday, February 13th, 2007

scott karp at publishing2 (who i respect immensely) wrote a post the other day about viacom, comedy central and competing with youtube…

his basic point was that if viacom creates a decent video destination and enables embedding, users will migrate over as…it’s all about the content, stupid :)

while i agree with him to some extent, a lot has to go right for viacom…

youtube has the best experience, period…it just isn’t that easy to copy - it’s all about the little things, and no matter what, you can’t duplicate their very real and vibrant community. network effects are kicking in…

plus, i don’t know if others noticed this, but viacom is expiring videos.

What does the “expired” date mean?
Due to licensing agreements we’re unable to keep this clip available on the site past the expiration date. We hope you enjoy it while we have it up.

while this may be ok for destination sites, it doesn’t work for video embeds. thirty days later, content doesn’t work on your site? or it changes to another video? that just won’t fly…

click on the embed link in this video below (see my “update” as well) and you get the following message…“this video expires on: 03/08/2007″

hmmm…perhaps i’m wrong. when you click on the embed link in this video when it’s on comedycentral.com you get the warning that the video expires march 8th, 2007..but, when you click on the embed link here you don’t get that same warning. what gives?

UPDATE (mar. 26, 2007): see my post from today about this and newspapers…btw, as you can see above - i was right, the videos do expire…

perfect movie for a rainy wknd (with a 4 1/2 yr old)…
