most everyone has heard about the new “my nytimes” product. but, earthlink also just launched a pretty nice rss reader and a social bookmarking app (src: steve rubel). congrats to dave and craig at earthlink (craig and i used to work together).
both companies do one thing very well…they use editors (real people) to help people discover new sources.
- nytimes allows you to see pages created by journalists. you can then bookmark a journalist’s page or add specific sources to your page..very very nice!
- earthlink provides recommended sources from different staffers
nytimes also allows users to configure each module to view headlines, headlines and summaries, or headlines with just one summary (the top story). the main limitation (and, it’s a biggie) is that you can’t add any rss feed…this is similar to what yahoo news does on their main news page…both companies are quite concerned about content quality.
earthlink’s service is a full fledged rss reader…and, it’s pretty good. first off, it has a well-done river of news view, and, of course, the ability to see content from each source. next, it only shows “what’s new” like the new yahoo mail rss reader. but, what’s really nice is that they’ve integrated sharing tools into the interface so that it’s easy to save and tag items - similar to, but better than bloglines and rojo. earthlink’s implementation is subtle and puts the content first. i love both rojo and bloglines, it’s just that it’s difficult to get the UI right when trying to incorporate all sorts of actions and concepts.
note: that’s one reason why we (feedburner) created a tool allowing publishers to insert “action” widgets. publishers can use our feedflare offering to ensure that the services they choose (delicious, technorati, digg, sphere, etc….) are displayed wherever their content is syndicated (any reader, website, etc.). see the feedflare services (”email this” and “add to delicious”) and earthlink’s action tools in steve’s item below…

of course, neither of these RSS aggregators help filter content at the item level. yahoo just launched a widget that clusters rss content…but, it’s just a “research” widget. i can hardly wait until yahoo provides robust filtering for my yahoo, yahoo mail, and/or the frontpage. i wonder if that’s going to happen anytime soon :)
